This issue has been going on for long enough, and it's about time I said something so here it is. I've been a travel writer for many years now, and although its now a part of our lives; there's a number of things I hate about social media. These include: When people give cruising a bad name. Without mentioning any names; I've found a number of YouTube channels designed 'to give the cruise industry a bad name;' with posts telling their viewers why they hate certain cruise lines, and (even worse) why they'll never cruise with certain lines again.' But that's not all. I also seen several YouTube video posts from people containing: 'what the cruise lines won't tell you, why your Cabin Steward hates you, and what is now band on board cruise ships / airplanes, etc.' Every time I see these posts, red flags go up, and I naturally think those posts on these socials could be an AI deep fake.
Speaking of which; there's a number of 'deep fake channels, and AI videos' on the socials. Creating this content is so easy to do if you know how, and you can easily tell the video or photo is a fake. Ship’s Log is a cruise blogger on TIKTOK. The content was filmed on board cruise ships but there's no way the footage in this video is real. I say this because if it was real: 'the glass window on the stateroom balcony door would be completely smashed from the force of the wave, the creators video camera would be wet when the wave came into the cabin, no one would be allowed out on the side decks to keep the guests from going over board, the ships Pilot would take the ship out of the storms path via safer waters (even if it means missing a Port), and the ships Captain would also encourage the passengers to 'remain in their cabins' except for if they really had to walk around the ship because the passengers safety is the cruise lines top priority.'
Ships's Log TIKTOK page also had a video of an EFI Tornado forming over water. Although it’s obviously a deepfake I still thought it was really cleaver. I have since reported the account to TIKTOK so if you can't find it... that's why! But that's not all. One content creator posted a video of 'the Carnival Adventure's waterslide breaking as the ship sailed under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and another posted a short video of what was called ‘the tallest cruise ship;’ but if you look closely at the clip you'll see 'it's actually footage of two cruise ships fussed on top of each other, and designed to look like one ship.'
It's simple really. It’s malicious misinformation used for fraud, and entertainment. AI is a form of highly realistic synthetic media. It replaces a real persons face (or even their voice) with someone else's ‘making them appear to be doing, or saying things they never would.’ It’s also when the video creators produce counterfeit footage designed to convince the viewers to think it's actually real.
These social media posts are everywhere, and it's so annoying. My best advice when scrolling socials is ‘just be careful’ because there’s a change it could be fake, and not everything you see on line is real. Stay safe out there.
Happy virtual cruising everyone!
